The Student Union of University of Oulu is the student union of all students of University of Oulu, which brings students together in events, advocates for students’ rights at the University of Oulu and the society, and offers individual advice when needed.
The student union also organises activities such as events and wellbeing tutoring. In the University you can find many different Student Societies, who gather together the students of a certain field. These societies are given support, grants and training by OYY. Naturally, Histoni is one of these societies.
OYY’s organisation
Every other year the Student Union holds a Student Council election to select a 37-person Council of Representatives to decide on the major operational policies. All members are eligible to vote in the Student Council election. Every year the Council of Representatives selects a Board to carry out OYY’s daily operations and to publicly represent the Student Union. The staff is responsible for customer service, guidance and supporting the Board’s work.
Hallopeds
In the University of Oulu students are represented by student representatives. They are also called hallopeds (from Finnish ”hallinnon opiskelijaedustaja”, which translates to student representative). A student representative is the voice of students in decision making. There are more than a hundred student representatives in the University of Oulu and they have positions on every level in the University’s governance.
Student representatives are chosen for a term that lasts for two years, although resignation from a halloped position is possible in the middle of a term, for example when graduating or in case of other changes in life situation. OYY supports and trains hallopeds.
